When is rerouting a dryer vent the right call?

Ask it this way: is the duct dirty, or is the path wrong? A path is wrong when cleaning buys you a few months. Long second-floor runs in 1990s–2000s two-stories are the usual suspect. They terminate at a roof jack. Lint packs at the elbow up there. Birds nest in the hood. Rerouting means finding a shorter exit (a gable wall, a side wall, an eave) and abandoning the roof run instead of scrubbing it every year.

The other candidate is crawlspace venting on older homes. Flex duct sags between joists. Sagging holds moisture, and Charlotte summers keep it there. Lint sticks to wet metal and never dries. Rerouting overhead in rigid metal with a steady slope solves what cleaning cannot.
